The next generation of gaming consoles are expected to launch in 2020 and Microsoft is leading the charge. The company, yesterday unveiled the name and design for its upcoming Xbox. The device will be called the Xbox Series X and it has a vertical tower-like design instead of the flat design Xbox consoles have right now.
Unlike smartphones, laptops and many other consumer devices, gaming consoles do not follow a yearly update cycle. Microsoft last updated the Xbox back in 2017, with the One X. That too was a minor update though. The company has been working on the Series X under the Project Scarlett name so far and has made some promises to look forward to.
Alongside the console’s design, the company is also updating the Xbox Controller’s design. According to Microsoft, the new design is meant to accommodate an “even wider range of people". It also has a Share button now which is meant to make sharing game clips and captures with your friends simpler.
While the company hasn’t revealed details about the hardware inside the Xbox Series X, Phil Spencer, executive vice president of Gaming at Microsoft, told Gamespot that the Series X brings “over eight times the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit)" as the Xbox One.
The Xbox Series X is expected to allow gaming in 8K resolution and should support 120Hz refresh rates. While such resolutions and refresh rates may not be useful at launch, they make the console future proof.
With yesterday’s launch, Microsoft has beat Sony at least in unveiling some concrete details about its next generation console. The company’s primary competitor in this space is also expected to launch the Playstation 5 in December next year.
